Shows I Love, volume 1

As a theatre lover, I have been fortunate to see quite a few shows. Some have left me flat, while some have blown me away. Since I am not prone to making favorites lists and ranking shows, movies, etc., I have decided to showcase some of my favorites...in no certain order.

Without further ado:

RAGTIME (Fox Theatre, St. Louis, MO / Fall '99)

Simply put, this managed to be one of the most visually stunning shows I have ever seen, while still being personal and intimate in nature. The music was incredible, the characters and stories were moving, and the entire experience was just overwhelming!

Produced by the now defunct Livent and workshopped in Toronto, lucky theatre-goers of this city were in at the birth of this marvelous show. I saw it at least 3 times. What a cast - Stokes!, Audra McDonald, Marin Mazzie, Peter Friedman, Mark Jacoby. What songs by Flaherty & Ahrens. I'm particularly crazy about "What a Game".

I am not all that into awards, but how the big puppets (The Lion King) won Best Show at the Tony's over Sarah burying her heart in the ground is something I will never get over.

Never could make it through Doctorow's novel. I like a challenge, but never could make it through.

I saw 'The Lion King' twice - once in London, and once in St. Louis. It was impressive, yes, but it wasn't 'Ragtime.' I share your pain.

I definitely wish this one would tour sometime...I would snatch up a ticket for sure.

Blog surfing is a risky business, you never know what you might come across. 'Ragtime' never fails to destroy me emotionally, it is a true masterpiece. Excuse me, I'm in need of a tissue. Actually, a box of tissues.

I am glad your surfing led you here, Novabreeze. Sorry to give you the need of a box of tissues, but I enjoy your replies.

Perhaps next time my post will make you laugh?
